The Superiority of the Son
 
 
A. The Opening Contrast: Hebrews 1:1-2
 
(1) Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, (2a) but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son
 
1. The Contrast of two authoritative Words – that spoken in many and various ways long ago by the prophets, and that spoken in these last days by His Son
2. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways” versus “in these last days”
a. The time of Jesus and after was included in “these last days” versus “at the end of the ages”
3. “By the prophets” versus “By His Son”
4. The contrast in this chapter, leading up to the warning in Hebrews 2:1-4, is between the authority of the two Words
 
B. Seven Phrases Establishing the Authority of the Son: (Hebrews 2b-3)
 
(2b)….whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. (3) He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…
 
1. Whom he appointed the heir of all things…
 
a. Looking to the future, the Son, now alive, has been appointed heir of all things.
b. This is ordinary privilege of the “firstborn”
c. Scripture speaks of the inheritance we have awaiting as Christians, but it also speaks of the Son’s inheritance – and His inheritance consists of a renewed heaven and earth, and us, his people, his bride!
 
2. through whom also he created the world….
 
a. Now looking past, we see that the entire world itself was created through the Son.
b. The Son shares the dignity of Creator with the Father
c. See John 1:1-2 and Colossians 1:15ff.
 
3. He is the radiance of the glory of God….
 
a. The Son is the God’s glory visible to us.
b. The Shekinah glory of God is the Son!
 
4. and the exact imprint of his nature….
 
a. The Son is God made visible.
b. He perfectly displays the nature of God.
 
5. and he upholds the universe by the word of his power…
 
a. The Son is the present works to uphold the universe by His power
b. The very existence of all things is due to the sustaining power of the Son
c. This includes all the atoms and molecules that make up our bodies
d. Everyday we exist is a day of purpose in the plan of the Son who upholds all things. Everyday you wake up and your heart still beats is a day of purpose!
 
6. After making purification for sins….
 
a. Hebrews is a book primarily about the supreme once for all sacrifice of the Son once for sin.
b. Here this act of purification is seen as accomplished, the work is done, the Son has done what He was called and appointed to do.
 
7. he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high….
 
a. After finishing His work, the Son sat down. His work was done, he had accomplished his mission.
b. he sat down at the position of authority – at God’s right hand!
c. Here we hear echoes of Psalm 110:1 – the Davidic King is in session!
d. Yet, this great king is but at the right hand of the Father, the Ancient of Days, His Majesty on high.
 
C. The Authority of the Word of the Son
 
1. These seven characteristics establish the authority, power, and supremacy of the Son of God, God the Son.
2. Thus, given His authority and supremacy, His word has authority and is supreme
3. It is through this One, this Son, that God has spoken to us in these last days
4. Therefore, as we will see, we must heed His powerful and authoritative Word!
