For a couple of years I’ve tried to get people to contribute articles to our community based site, www.backporch.org, but it has not been an easy task. I think the fact that the web site as a web site is just so so, and the fact that it is connected to a church, and maybe to me (!)has not helped. But I still have a vision for the same idea, maybe in another context.
What about a Greensboro or Guilford County Wikipedia, with articles like in any encyclopedia being devoted to a range of subjects – history, architecture, geography, arts, biography, flora, fauna, business, commerce, local writers and literature education, etc.
I don’t know if the actual Wikipedia project allows for regional sections. Maybe if they don’t one of our local software brains could build something like Wikipedia for us, and we could add content to the real Wikipedia as we go. We would need a board of course, maybe even need to make the project into a kind of non profit of some kind.
Anyway, what a way to lasso some of the great minds of hobbyists and academics and professionals in our community into a community based knowledge project. Just think how helpful it would be to our students. I get giddy just thinking about it.
