Out There
The phrase "out there" is meant to contrast with the phrase "at church." Most people have full and busy lives in home, workplace, neighborhood, school, and community. We desire to honor the Lord’s wisdom in placing folks in these particular homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, and communities. Although we believe Christian community to be very important, and understand that realizing Christian community takes a certain amount of time together, we also take seriously our calling to be salt and light in the world, to bear witness to Christ wherever we are, and to make disciples of all the nations.
We consider it of great importance that one who professes to follow Jesus become like Jesus and learn to live all of life as unto Him wherever he or she already is. The home and the workplace and neighborhood are where the Christian life must be lived out day to day. This is where a professing Christian will make a difference or not make a difference. This is where the Christian’s life touches the lives of those who do not believe in or follow Jesus. By living a life of Christ-like and caring integrity "out there," the Christian gains the credibility to talk to others about Christ at the appropriate time. The significance of this ministry "out there" is another reason our church structure is so simple. We do not want to monopolize a person’s time in needless church activities and meetings. We do not want a person to think that getting serious about God means getting ever more busy in church activities. Rather, we want our members to be able to concentrate upon growing in Christ and serving Christ where they already are, and thereby bearing credible and loving witness to Him there. |
