Denomination

When I was born in 1957 there already existed hundreds, maybe even thousands, of Christian denominations. Later, when I actually became a Christian in the 1970’s, I came to grieve over this sad state of affairs. Certainly this is not what Jesus intended! Denominations are in many ways a relic of past generations, a dinosaur. One would hope that they would go the way of the dinosaur - into extinction! Given this hope, why in the world is Covenant Fellowship affiliated with a denomination, and why the Associate Reformed Presbyterian denomination in particular?

A group of Christians in a local church must choose either to be independent or to be connected to other churches in some way. There is no way around this basic choice. There are plusses and minuses to each approach. At Covenant Fellowship we have chosen to be formally connected to other believers and their churches in order that we might be accountable to someone, and in order that we might benefit from the wisdom of a larger body of believers. We do not have a narrow or competitive "denominational" mentality. We are not, and do not think or ourselves as "Presbyterians" but as "Christians," followers of Jesus Christ. In addition, we desire to have the very best possible relationship of cooperation and mutual accountability with our fellow evangelical churches in Greensboro.

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian denomination is an evangelical denomination committed to the authority of Scripture, to world evangelization, and to church planting, and has a long history of faithful witness to Jesus Christ. We believe that our affiliation with this body will bring encouragement to us and will be an effective ministry channel from us into the world.
